Promises
Few rules I would keep alone, but hopefully how I want the two of us to work.
The emotional safety page is about what I hold to whether or not it is ever returned. This page is different. These are about us, and they only mean anything if you want them. I am writing them down so they are specific, and so you can hold me to the exact words rather than to a general promise to be better.
1. Respect in the good weeks, and especially the bad ones
Anyone can be kind on an easy Tuesday. What I am promising is the hard version: the same tone when I am tired, when I am losing the argument, when I think I am right. Nothing said because it will land hardest. No contempt, not once.
My half of it: I stop the moment I notice I have started trying to win.
2. The load gets carried together, in whatever split that week needs
A life has weight in it. Cooking, money, appointments, families, the boring administration of being two people. I am not promising a permanent even split, because that is not how real weeks go. Some weeks it is fifty and fifty. Some weeks you are underwater and it is a hundred from me and nothing from you, and that is fine. Some weeks it is a hundred from both of us. Some weeks we are both flattened and it is twenty and twenty and the dishes wait.
What I am promising is that the ratio moves toward whoever is struggling, and that I notice it without being told.
3. Hard conversations have a limit
They end when one of us says they are ending, and the person who calls it is not doing something wrong. No relitigating at midnight, no wearing the other one down until they agree just to make it stop.
Inside the conversation, my job is to understand your position well enough to say it back to you in a way you would recognise, before I argue with any of it.
4. No trip you did not choose
I will not assume you are coming, and I will not treat a no as something to negotiate. If I want to go somewhere and you do not, I go and you stay, and neither of us pays for it afterward.
The other direction matters more to me. I want to go on the trips you plan. Pittsburgh. Miami. Places I would not have picked, on an itinerary that is yours.
5. Complete transparency
You get the full version. Not the edited one, not the one that leaves out whatever I am embarrassed about that month. Phone, messages, plans, and money, including what I earn, what I owe, and what I spend it on.
This is not a special allowance for a probation period. It is how I want it to work permanently, and it is not conditional on you offering the same.
6. Lives of our own
We should not do everything together. You should have evenings, friends, and plans I am not part of, and I should have the same, and neither of us should have to justify them or make them smaller.
I want to be someone you come home to, not someone you have to get away from.
7. Need for space
A need for space will be honored. Period. No questions asked.
Not negotiated down, not waited out, not met with "can we just talk for five minutes first." When you need room, you get it, and you do not have to explain why, defend how much, or manage how I take it. The asking is not the start of a discussion. It is the end of one.
8. Reset
And after, we reset. Not a truce where we move around each other stiffly for two days until it wears off. We do the chores together the same as any other evening. We go to bed on the same side we always do.
The problem is the thing we are against. Not each other. A hard conversation does not turn into a cold house, and it does not follow us to bed. We sleep like two people who disagreed about something, because that is what we are, and wake up like two people who are fine, because that is also what we are.
